Lagos State has announced plans to introduce its own State Driver’s Licence, to run alongside the federal licence so motorists can choose between them. The state said the move is aimed at cutting processing delays and strengthening road-safety compliance.
The numbers behind it
In 2025, the state’s Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera network recorded 737,340 traffic violations. Over the same period the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency processed 56,877 driver’s licences (27,067 new and 29,810 renewals), issued 1,158 International Driver’s Permits, and 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates.
What it means for you
Enforcement in Lagos is increasingly automated – cameras read plates and flag expired or missing particulars without a physical stop. Keeping your licence, insurance and roadworthiness current is the simplest way to stay clear of penalties.
