Third-party motor insurance now enforced nationwide - GetItDone

On 1 February 2025, the Nigeria Police Force began the nationwide enforcement of compulsory third-party motor insurance. Under the law, every vehicle on Nigerian roads must carry at least a valid third-party motor insurance policy – and officers are now checking.

What changed

The minimum third-party premium is ₦15,000, the rate set by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) back in January 2023 (up from the old ₦5,000). In return, third-party claims cover was raised to up to ₦3 million for damage to other people’s property or vehicles. The February 2025 development was about enforcement – making sure the policy every motorist is legally required to hold is actually in place.

What it means for you

Driving without valid insurance now risks fines and delays at checkpoints. Third-party cover is also one of the documents tied to your vehicle particulars, so it is easiest to keep it current alongside your licence and roadworthiness.
